Manners of Ruqyah and Characteristics of the Exorcist or Raaqi (the one that does Ruqyah)
Following are some of the manners of Ruqyah and characteristics of a Raaqi. Most of this applies to the patient as well and both of them must have these characteristics in order to gain maximum benefit and shifa from Allah.
(1). He should be upon Aqeedah Tawheed and must not have any form of Shirk in Aqeedah. This is the foundation and of utmost importance.
(2). He must have sincere intention and do Ruqyah solely for the pleasure of Allah alone.
(3). He must be upright in conduct and stead fast upon Quran and Sunnah. He ought to avoid all forms on Innovations and observe the principles of Quran and Sunnah in his words and actions.
(4). He should be a person who abstains from sins and constantly turns back to Allah in repentance and try his best to avoid sins to the best of his ability and not allow Shaytaan any room to hit back. This doesn’t mean that if a person sins then he or she cannot be healed or cannot be a raaqi. It simply means to try best to avoid major sins, minimise the minor sins, avoid acts which allow shaytaan to attack a person and increase in repentance.
(5). A Raaqi puts himself in danger as he recites the word of Allah on an Unseen enemy. Hence the raaqi must have firm Tawakkul on Allah and believe that Allah is enough for him.
(6). He should have the correct belief about the power of Quran and its effects on the Shaytaan. He should be knowledgeable about the tricks of Shaytaan and its conduct. Once during Ruqyah a Jinn said to Shaykh ul Islam Ibn Taymiyyah (rahimahullah): ‘I will leave this body in respect for you’. Ibn Taymiyyah replied: ‘No, rather (leave) in obedience to Allah and His Messenger’. If Shaykh ul Islam was not aware of Satan’s tricks, he would not have replied like that.
(7). A Raaqi must have the basic understanding of the Fiqh of Ruqyah.
(8). He should be a Da’ee. A Da’ee is a person who enjoins good and forbids evil by all means.
(9). The Raaqi must be confidential and conceal whatever which happens during a Ruqyah session.
(10). A Raaqi should always give words of encouragement to his patient never make him despair. Similarly a Raaqi must observe compassion and mercy with the patient and avoid being harsh.
(11). He should observe supplication to Allah, seeking refuge in Him from the Devil and protection of the devil through supplications. He should be equipped with all types of protection as mentioned in this article. [to be uploaded soon in sha Allah]
